The Goat River comes down out of the Kootenays and drops over a shelf of rock, and this is the moment it breaks — water pouring through the gaps between boulders, white churning down into the dark pool below, wet bronze stone against cold green water.

A riffle is the shallow, broken water where a river runs fast over stone. It is the part you hear before you see.

Painted loose and fast enough to keep the movement in it. The warm metallic tone in the rock set against the cool of the water is what makes the picture work, and it is the through-line in Teresa Grasby's landscapes.

Six feet wide and two feet tall, it does what almost no painting can — it fills a long wall. Above a sofa, down a hallway, along a stairwell.
