Teresa Grasby — Calgary Artist, Entrepreneur & Mentor

Teresa Grasby is a Calgary-based fine artist and entrepreneur whose vibrant paintings capture the beauty of the Alberta landscape. From sweeping Rocky Mountain panoramas to intimate aspen groves, bold florals, and dynamic cityscapes, Teresa's work communicates an energetic spirit and deep connection to the Canadian West.
What sets Teresa apart is the rare combination of artistic vision and entrepreneurial drive. She has personally built Grasby Art Studio from a single 600-square-foot room into a thriving 3,000-square-foot art facility — NW Calgary's premier creative hub — serving children, teens, and adults from all walks of life.
A Legacy of Art
Teresa comes from a family of artists, including Elsie Archer, Diana Waller, and Janice Anderson. Mentored and encouraged by family and friends from an early age, her artistic talent was recognized throughout her education with scholarships and awards including the Wess Irwin Scholarship, the Robert Warren Scholarship, and the Undergraduate Merit Award.
With a passion for nature and the local environment, Teresa pursued a Bachelor of Science in Physical Geography and a Master's in Environmental Design at the University of Calgary, alongside a minor in Art (Painting and Drawing). This unique combination of scientific observation and artistic expression gives her work a distinctive depth — she sees landscape not just as a subject, but as a system of light, form, and geological story.
Painting & Practice
Over decades of dedicated practice, Teresa has honed her skills across multiple art mediums and subjects, enabling her to teach a multitude of painting and drawing workshops at her art school, Grasby Art Studio. Her workshop subjects include the towns, lakes, rivers, and waterfalls of the local Rocky Mountains, Banff and Kootenay National Parks, and Kananaskis Country, as well as figure, floral, and animal studies. She is adept at drawing and painting in watercolour, acrylic, and oil — working confidently at large scale with bold composition, rich colour harmony, and the unexpected shimmer of metallic hues. Her canvases invite viewers into the landscape, filling rooms with warmth and optimism.
Teresa's paintings have been sold through prominent Calgary-area galleries including Calyx Distinctive Arts, the Leighton Art Centre, the Saffron Gallery in Cochrane, and Cornie's Art Gallery, as well as through the Calgary Zoo Gala. Her work and studio have been featured in Avenue Magazine, the Calgary Journal, and the Spectator Tribune.
Grasby Art Studio — Building a Creative Community
In 2011, Teresa founded Grasby Art Studio at 6520 Bowness Road NW in Calgary. What began as a small classroom with a simple mandate — to mentor developing artists, nurture talent, and build confidence — has grown into a 3,000-square-foot art hub with three classrooms, an art supply store, and a professional gallery.
The studio has mentored over 5,000 students, including children, teens, adults, and students with disabilities. Teresa has developed a comprehensive curriculum of levelled workshops for adults beginning their art journey, as well as intermediate-level workshops in drawing, painting, landscape, floral, treescape, cityscape, and mountain palette knife techniques.
Teresa's commitment to the next generation extends to her staff — many are young arts program graduates whom she mentors in teaching, giving them their first professional experience in arts education.
The Grasby Art Cellar
The Grasby Art Cellar is the gallery within Grasby Art Studio. This broad focus across diverse workshop subjects has allowed Teresa success offering a wide range of workshops over the years, generating a supporting body of work that is for sale in the Grasby Art Cellar Gallery. The gallery also showcases original paintings by Teresa and local guest artists, celebrating Alberta's creative spirit through mountain landscapes, treescapes, florals, figurative works, and cityscapes. The Art Cellar also hosts workshops, weekly classes, and special events celebrating local musicians and artists.
Every piece on display is available for purchase, and all artwork ships with a Certificate of Authenticity.
